FY09 House Budget Released

April 19, 2008

Dear Friends of MSA:

This past week the FY09 House version of the budget was released.  We are happy to to report that the Commonwealth Corps and Mentoring line items were inlcuded at level funding.  The workforce training fund (line item 7003-0702), which has historically contained the state's funding for AmeriCorps, was funded at $2M.  However, House Ways and Means decided not to list specific earmarks for this account.  Given that the entire account was level funded, MSA is optimistic that $900,000 of the $2M is intended for AmeriCorps programs in FY09.  As a safety measure, Representative Kennedy (Brockton) has filed an amendment on our behalf to include specific earmark language reagrding the $900,000 for AmeriCorps.

Please be sure to call Representative Kennedy's office to thank him for his continued support and leadership on behalf of AmeriCorps in MA.  Please also show your appreciation by contacting Rep. Kennedy's legislative aide, Mallory Cole at 617-722-2012 or mallory.cole@state.ma.us.

Now, we must forge ahead with our advocacy in the Senate.  Please contact your Senators and let them know how important Mentoring and AmeriCorps funding is in your community.

We will continue to keep everyone updated throughout the remainder of the budget process.

We sincerely thank you for your continued support,

Molly
