Professionalizing Volunteer Roles for Leadership Development
When: Wednesday, April 7, 2010
9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Where: Brandeis University, 415 South Street, Waltham
(Directions will be sent with registration confirmation)
Cost: $30 (includes continental breakfast)
Registration Deadline: March 31
Workshop Description:
The business of volunteering - is this an oxymoron or the new wave of the future? While we all love our volunteer base, new approaches to "professionalizing" volunteer roles and rewards can expand pipelines to leadership and build capacity for organizations. With growing numbers of talented volunteers at all career stages currently available and the increasing value of professional volunteer experiences for both the employed and unemployed, there is no better time than now.
This workshop will teach you how to shift your volunteer management paradigm and develop a strategic approach that is realistic and feasible to design, implement and sustain. Specific topics will include: assessment tools for evaluating your organization's needs/capacity for strengthening a volunteer program, designing a framework for engaging volunteers on a professional leadership level, how to market your program to new/existing volunteers from the "selling point" of today's workplace needs, and best practices for "professional" volunteer programs.

BE SAFE: A Holistic Approach to Prevention Services for Youth

Where: AIDS Action Committee, 75 Amory Street, Boston 02119
(Directions will be sent with registration confirmation)
Cost: $30 (includes continental breakfast)
Registration Deadline: April 14
Workshop Description:
When youth question staff members or program volunteers about their own behavior regarding sexual health or substance use, is there a consistent staff/volunteer response? Are adults in your youth program viewed as “askable” by the youth involved? This workshop will provide an introduction to a new curriculum that addresses the usually separate issues of sexual & mental health; substance use; teen dating violence/healthy relationships and sexual violence in an inter-related, holistic manner. BE SAFE is a collaboration among six organizations with an expertise in these issues that collaborates with youth-serving organizations throughout Massachusetts to train teams of management and direct service staff on creating and maintaining a climate of safety. The experiential curriculum addresses: how to have effective and meaningful conversations with youth about important issues in their lives; making referrals to other resources; and maintaining boundaries while serving as positive role models and “keeping it real”. Through interactive exercises participants will examine their own beliefs and values on these issues; identify elements of effective conversations; learn about and use the ASK tool(Assess, Support, Knowledge of Resources) to enhance communication and begin to think about what constitutes a safe youth environment. Those wanting more will also learn how BE SAFE works with programs, and options for getting involved.
