AFC provides mentoring to seven to fourteen-year old foster and adopted youth, and others from out-of-birth home backgrounds. The AFC Mentors one-to-one program matches adults with youth in foster care, adoption or similar situations. Matches meet for at least eight hours per month for at least a year. With a grant, AFC will develop 15 new one-to-one matches in the Boston area.

Big Brothers Big  Sisters of Berkshire county is a community based  mentoring program located in Berkshire County. The Program proposes to make 17 matches. Free and low cost community accesses activities include nature hikes, riding bikes, museum visits, baking, enjoying new food, board games, etc.

BBBBSFC will provide one-to- one mentoring relationships to children and youth in the poorest county in Massachusetts; Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region. 20 at risk youth are expected to be matched, some from the existing wait list and others will be newly referred. The main activity of the program will be to recruit, assess, train and support the new mentors and mentees.

BBBSHC proposes to match 45 mentees from inner-city, low income Springfield youth living in single-parent homes. The goal of the program is to prevent drug and alcohol abuse, prevent other types of juvenile crimes, increase school attendance and academic perfromance, and to help mentees create sronger self-esteem and a greater awareness of opportunities and resources available to them in the community.

Big Sister Association of Greater Boston Community-based Mentoring program is proposing 326 matches between women and girls ages 7 to 15 in the Greater Boston area.Big Sisters support Little Sisters through issues affecting them from depression and family problems to eating disorders and sexual pressure.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston is proposing to design, develop and deliver a site-based mentoring program which will serve 25 youth with a 1:1 relationship with a caring adult.  Matches will meet at clubs in Boston for at least 1.5 hours each week.  The program will be built to support academic progress among Club members who are struggling in school and who exhibit signs of needing an additional caring consistent adult presence in their life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County (BBBS/HC), a program of The Center for Human Development will create 25 new community-based matches. The program will match young people, ages 6 to 16, in need of an adult friend and mentor in one-on-one matches in the Hampshire County. The mentors will serve to enhance the personal development of youth.

Centro Presente’s youth program, Pintamos Nuestro Mundo/We Paint Our World (PNM) serves at-risk immigrant Latino youth between the ages of 11 and 18.  PNM is the only program dedicated to Latino Youth in Somerville. PNM aims to engage youth in positive art-oriented activities, promote leadership development and offer a safe place where youth can develop their true potential in a culturally relevant environment.  The program proposes to create site-based mentoring that includes group mentoring sessions and one-on-one mentoring. Both components will offer 6 hours of mentoring per month. The program proposes to create 42 matches.

The City of New Bedford through a cooperative agreement with the New Bedford Prevention Partnership (the partnership) provides one-on-one mentoring. The Partnership acts as a facilitator for a variety of after school programs and along with the City, the schools, the faith community and business sector, created SMILES (Southcoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning Education and Service). SMILES increases mentoring awareness and opportunities cultivating a movement towards mentoring citywide. SMILES propose to create 40 matches in the New Bedford area.

Big Friends Little Friends (BFLF) is a mentoring program that was started by Family Service Association of Greater Fall River, Inc. BFLF’s provides one-on-one mentoring relationships between adults and children (7-18) from the Greater Fall River Area. BFLF proposes to create 26 new matches. Mentees come from low-income households and the majority live in a single-parent household.

Friends of Children propose funding to expand the number of youth served by its mentoring program, the Adolescent Advocacy Mentoring Project (AAMP).  AAMP serves at-risk foster youth in Franklin and Hampshire counties of Western Massachusetts. AAMP proposes to make 12 new matches between the ages of 14 to 17 in the long-term care of the state’s Department of Social Services.

The M2ATCH (Mentors & Mentees are Together Connecting in Holyoke) Program at Girls Incorporated of Holyoke will create 1:1 or 2:1 matches for girls, ages 6-18.  There will be a 6-11 year old cohort of 15 matches and 1 12-18 year old cohort of 15 matches.  Matches will meet a minimum of 6 hours a month for at least 8 months. The goals of M2ATCH are for mentees to have increased confidence, life skills and positive behaviors.

The Nuestros Jovenes en Accion mentoring Program will provide mentors for predominantly Latino and African-American Boston Public School students in Jamaica Plain/Roxbury. The program proposes to create 60 new one-on-one matches between high school students and adults. The mentors will meet with the students for at least 8 hours per month for 9 months in a site-based program at the central office of the Hyde Square Tack Force in Jamaica Plain. The program objectives are: to increase the academic achievement of students; to convince the youth that they are potential college students and to develop strategies to create individual paths to college; to develop positive, rewarding relationships between youth and adults; and to engage each match pair in a civic engagement activity.

The John Andrew Mazie Foundation recruits and trains volunteers to mentor Framingham High School students so the teens can take control of their lives, set and achieve goals, prepare for college or other post-secondary educational training, and experience success. The program will identify and recruit 40 sophomores from low-income and, currently, 87% minority students.

Lowell Association for the Blind (LAB) is a community-based organization dedicated to working for the blind and visually impaired in the Greater Lowell/Merrimack Valley area. The Visually Impaired Partners (VIP) will match 10 youth with blind and visually impaired adults from the LAB program and referrals from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. VIP is a site-based program, meeting one Saturday per month and includes activities in the office as well as in the community.

Partners for Youth with Disabilities, Inc. (PYD), located in Boston, is committed to empowering young people with disabilities to reach their full potential for personal development.  PYD’s mentoring program offers one-to-one meetings to help matches develop their relationships. The goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for youth to experience real-life, disability-specific challenges under adults who have overcome these challenges.  PYD intends to create an additional 15 matches. Mentees will be youth ages 6 to 18 with a wide range of disabilities matched with mentors over the age of 18 with similar disabilities.

Viva La Cultura program is based in arts exploration as a means to link your Latina women with their cultural backgrounds. Mentees meet individually with their mentors each month to participate in fun activities and to work on projects. Together, matches prepare for and lead a discussion among all the matches during the monthly group meetings. The proposed number of new matches is 30 Latina girls ages 10-14 from Mission Hill and the Greater Boston area.

 

Southcoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning, Educ. & Service (SMILES)

SMILES- Fall River is creating mentor/mentee relationships for at-risk youth.  The program serves as a site-based skill development program meeting once per week for two hours during the school year.  The mentees will be ages 8-10 and work on a curriculum with their mentee that is broken into blocks concentrating on different topics, such as cooking, manners and nutrition.  Specific workshops will help to enhance self-esteem, teach respect and build leadership skills.

The Arts Outreach: mentoring Through Photography and Visual Arts is a program directed towards 5th and 6th grade high-risk children in Brockton. The program offers college courses where Stonehill students experience mentoring younger elementary school students through art. The proposed project will serve 20 new matches. The Program’s goal is to help children overcome their negative environmental factors by providing positive role models through arts mentorship.

 

Strong Women Strong Girls, Inc.

Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) utilizes a group mentoring model that pairs 2-3 college age mentors with small groups of elementary school girls (approximately 10 girls per group, but fewer in some groups). In the 2008-2009 program year, Strong Women, Strong Girls will engage 300 elementary school girls throughout Greater Boston and will engage 100 college age women as mentors. SWSG’s mission is to utilize lessons learned from strong women throughout history to encourage young girls to become strong women themselves.

The YWCA Malden will match 11 mentors with  groups of 3 youth from its site-based Youth Enrichment Program and its school-based Enrichment Program reaching a total of 33 youth. The matches will meet as a group for 2 hours a week. Through its years of providing support and guidance to youth through informal mentoring relationships, the agency has witnessed how an adult mentor can change the level and lethality of a youth’s risk behaviours.
