Thank You for Attending AmeriCorps Opening Day!

John & Will

The Massachusetts Service Alliance would like to thank all AmeriCorps members, staff   and special guests for joining us on November 4th for a truly unforgettable event - AmeriCorps Opening Day 2011.  Over 1,200 individuals celebrated along side MSA at the Reggie Lewis Center last month.  Special appearences added to the excitement of the day, by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and National Director of AmeriCorps, John Gomperts.

Kevin Andrews

We would like to give a special thank you to our Keynote Speaker, Kevin Andrews, a proud AmeriCorps Alumnus and currently the Headmaster at the Neighborhood House Charter School for offering such inspirational words for the 2011-2012 service year.

This year alone, over 2,000 AmeriCorps members will dedicate 2 million hours at more than 90 AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA sites to help address critical need throughout the Commonwealth.  Their efforts will include assistance to the elderly and high-risk youth, early literacy, poverty and homelessness, and environmental preservation.

 Opening Day Celebration

After the opening ceremony, members dispersed across the city of Boston for a busy afternoon of civic engagement activities.  Corps members formed lasting bonds while sorting food at the Greater Boston Food Bank and worked side by side in the chilly fall weather removing invasive species from the grounds of Franklin Park.  Others had the opportunity to strengthen their civic knowledge while touring the Massachusetts State House, Moakley Court House, and the Museum of African American History.
